IPx5 explained
The IPx5 test relates to the water-resistance of an electrical
product. The test requires that a product has passed a test from water
jets (see figure) in addition to the less severe falling-water and splashed-water
tests of the more common IPx4 standard.
IPx5 involves subjecting a transceiver to a shower of
rain for three minutes from all directions. the water is delivered through
holes of 6.3mm diameter at a rate of 12.5 l/minute and from a distance
of 2.5m. This equates to water hitting the transceiver at a speed of
24km/hour - sufficient for it to be pushed away were it not anchored.
By contrast the IPx4 test involves spraying water from
holes 0.4mm diameter at a rate of 0.07l/minute with the holes being
laid out in a semicircle with a pitch of 50mm. In terms of water volume,
IPx5 is 178 times greater than IPx4. The severity of the IPx5 test is
such that any persons using the radio in such conditions would not survive!
