About the best thing you can do to improve your hand held scanner's performance is to use an antenna that's dedicated to what you want to listen to. For example, if you're a civil or military air band enthusiast, then you can do much better than using the 'jack of all trades, master of none' wideband antenna that came with your scanner. By using a telescopic antenna you can adjust the length. Instead of extending it to it's full length, try extending it to the length that is around a quarter wave of the frequency band you are interested in. You can find this by dividing 7500 by the frequency in MHz; the answer will be in centimetres. So, as an example for, say, 450MHz, you should only extend the telescopic antenna to around 16-17 cm.
